Understanding Your Survival Brain

When we feel overwhelmed or unsafe, our brain triggers an automatic survival response. This isn't "bad behaviour"—it's our nervous system trying to protect us.

1. Fight (The Protector)

• What it looks like: Irritability, shouting, clenching fists, or physical aggression.

• The feeling: A rush of heat, racing heart, and "I have to stop this now."

2. Flight (The Escape Artist)

• What it looks like: Fidgeting, pacing, running away (elopement), or "tuning out."

• The feeling: Restlessness, panic, and an urgent need to leave.

3. Freeze (The Shield)

• What it looks like: Feeling "stuck," unable to speak, looking "blank," or feeling heavy.

• The feeling: Numbness, coldness, or feeling disconnected.

How to help:

• For Fight/Flight: Use "heavy work" (pushing a wall, weighted blanket, or a brisk walk).

• For Freeze: Use gentle grounding (a warm drink, a soft texture, or just sitting nearby).
